      KYIV — THE CAPITAL OF UKRAINE

Kyiv is situated on both banks of the river Dnipro. Kyiv has a population of more than 3 million inhabitants.
 Fifteen centuries have passed over its ancient hills. The city is green and beautiful. Many streets are lined up with chestnut trees. The green lawns, squares, public gardens are bright with red tulips. Every last Sunday of May the Kyiv Spring Festival is traditionally held in the city. But whether it is all in blossom or covered with snow, Kyiv is always lovely.

Kyiv enjoys wide popularity in many countries. It is the scientific, industrial and cultural centre of Ukraine. It has many scientific institutions and higher educational establishments among which are National University, Polytechnic University, Food Industry Techno­logical University, Light Industry Technological University, Peda­gogical University, Medical University, etc.

There are huge enterprises in Kyiv. They produce excavators, air liners, computers, automatic lathes, gas equipment, chemical goods, cameras, ready-made clothes, etc.
 The museums, art galleries, theatres and historical monuments in the capital make it very important for world culture.

There are many places of historic interest among them:
 Kyiv – Pechersk Lavra, the St.Sophia's Cathedral, the Golden Gate, the Monument to Bogdan Khmelnitsky and the Prince Volodimir and others. In the park of Immortal Glory there is a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
There are many fine museums in Kyiv: the State Museum of Ukrainian and Russian Art, and so on. Kyiv is famous for its theaters such as Opera House ( Taras Shevchenco Opera and Ballet Theatre), the Ivan Franko Ukrainian Drama Theatre and others.

The people of Ukraine are proud of their capital because it has become one of the world biggest centres where different festivals, scientific congresses, international exhibitions and world sport events take place every year.
